The majority of Americans believe that President Trump is in close alignment with Russia, including more than a quarter of Republicans, a poll released Thursday found.
Reuters/Ipsos Survey Fifty-six percent of respondents found that the president was too close to Moscow, including 27% of Republicans and 89% of Democrats.
Polls found that 44% of Americans surveyed support Trump's plan to condition military aid on Ukraine and the US ukrane mineral trade. That support included two-thirds of Republicans and one in five Democrats.
The poll was conducted over two days this week and was completed Wednesday amid negotiations over a proposed US ceasefire contract aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The administration announced Tuesday that it would restore military and intelligence news support to Ukraine following talks between Secretary Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Ukrainian officials from Saudi Arabia. The meeting helped to repair relations after the February 28th meeting of President Trump, Vice President Vance and Ukrainian President Voullein at the White House.
Trump has been criticised in recent weeks for calling Zelensky a dictator and suggesting that Russian invasion was his fault.
Ukraine agreed to support the ceasefire earlier this week and put the ball in the Russian court. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that he has been open to a 30-day ceasefire but has proposed vague terms for his support.
According to the Associated Press, Putin said in his announcement that Trump “thanks for his extremely careful attention to the Ukraine settlement. US Special Envoy Steve Witkov landed in Moscow to meet with Putin earlier that day.
Trump told White House reporters that he was cautiously optimistic about Putin's reaction, sitting with NATO Secretary General Mark Latte.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll included 1,422 adults, with a 3 percentage point error.
