Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina is the top candidate to run for vice president against Donald Trump in a recent poll. The poll: Daily MailOther lawmakers who made it to the top of the list include North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).
The Republican convention is set to convene next week and reports suggest Trump could announce his nominee within days. The move comes as President Joe Biden struggles to earn the trust of many Democrats who are unsure of his ability to lead the country for another four years.
The Daily Mail reported that 13% of respondents in a poll of 1,000 voters said they wanted Scott to be the vice presidential running mate. Rubio came in a close second with 12% of the vote. Ben Carson, who served in Trump’s first cabinet term, also received 12% of the vote.
Vance received just 4% of the vote for running mate despite having the backing of many of Trump’s supporters. Amid continued rumors and speculation, Trump said in late June that he had already made up his mind about who his running mate would be.
But Trump’s pick was not revealed during the first presidential debate, as the Trump campaign seemed keen to keep the spotlight on Biden’s poor performance, prompting many Democrats to call for the president to step down, though Biden has maintained he intends to continue in the race.
The Blaze News reported that Biden released a statement on Monday saying, “I hear the concerns people have — their sincere fears and anxieties about what is at stake. I also know that these concerns come from genuine respect for my career in public service and my record as President. And I have been moved by the expressions of affection from so many of those who have known and supported me throughout my career.”
“I can answer all of this clearly and without question: If I didn’t absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024, I would not be running again.”
Since the first presidential debate, Trump appears to have widened his slim lead over the president.
It’s unclear whether Trump’s team has decided on a specific date for announcing his running mate.
