Impact of Trump’s Health Care Price Transparency on Midterm Elections
President Trump’s initiative for health care price transparency might significantly influence the upcoming midterm elections, potentially benefiting Republicans, according to a study by Echelon Insights shared with Breitbart News.
Trump laid the groundwork for price transparency early in his second term, issuing an executive order mandating that hospitals and health insurers provide “meaningful pricing information to Americans”:
All necessary actions must be taken by the Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Labor, and Secretary of Health and Human Services to implement and enforce the health care price transparency regulations based on Executive Order 13877.
The survey posed a question to participants: “Would you support or oppose Donald Trump’s health care policies if he mandated showing actual prices to patients before treatments in 2026?”
This issue is particularly relevant as Democrats are invoking a government shutdown, which is largely centered on health care, while also pushing for medical services for undocumented immigrants.
Under the proposed conditions, support for Trump’s health care policies surged, with 62% of voters in favor compared to 22% against. Independent voters showed a 34% increase in support with 57% in favor and 23% opposed. Interestingly, Democratic opinion is split, with 39% supporting and 39% opposing the initiative.
A further 66% of respondents indicated that the government should require insurers to provide cost estimates before treatment, urging that this process should begin “as soon as possible.”
“Voters want to know the actual price of health care services upfront and are willing to support those who facilitate this change,” Kristen Soltis Anderson of Echelon Insights noted.
The study also found that 65% of voters perceive Trump’s pressure on insurance companies as standing up to lobbyists, and 88% of 2024 Trump supporters trust that he can deliver results quicker than others.
Nevertheless, opinions diverge along party lines, with Democrats generally expressing greater confidence in health care—by a margin of 9 points (50% to 41%)—and a 24-point difference among independents. Trump’s policies have an approval rating of 42% against 49% disapproval, but this could shift dramatically if price transparency initiatives commence in 2026.
This could all play a role in the midterm elections, with half of voters stating they would be more inclined to support a candidate aligned with Trump’s health care transparency goals. Additionally, 70% would be pleasantly surprised if Trump challenged hospital and insurance lobbyists.
Republican strategist David Kochel remarked that while Democrats are trying to focus on health care for the election, Republicans have key issues concerning affordability and transparency.
“Voter backing for health care price transparency is bipartisan. Trump is positioning Republicans to attract independents on this topic. The upfront price disclosure could become a pivotal issue at the polls,” he stated. “However, this must be accomplished before the midterms to show progress on the issue.”
Trent England, Executive Director of Save Our States, emphasized the importance of price transparency in health care for Republicans.
We are hearing from constituents struggling with rising costs, particularly health care. The first step to change is medical price transparency—making prices known before treatment. Trump supports this, and urgent action is essential for small businesses and working Americans. We shouldn’t have to navigate hidden healthcare prices. Americans deserve to know upfront what their medical costs will be.
This discussion arises as Democrats face criticism for a government shutdown purportedly tied to health care reforms, even as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) insists these issues are unrelated and reflect a crisis created by Democrats themselves.
Democrats, in trying to assign blame for this health crisis to Republicans, often overlook their role in its creation. It’s essential to remember that under Obamacare, Democrats engineered the bill, passing it without any Republican votes, and later extended credits during the pandemic without Republican agreement.
Johnson noted, “Facts are what they are, and we aim to clarify the truth. As John Adams said, facts are stubborn things.”
