New Free Grocery Store Launches in NYC
Polymarket, a company recognized for its predictive market activities, is stepping into New York City’s food scene. They’re debuting what they claim is the city’s first free grocery store.
This unique store will open in Lower Manhattan from February 12 to February 16, running daily from noon. It’s described as being “fully stocked,” allowing New Yorkers to shop without needing to spend a dime.
On Tuesday, Polymarket shared on social media that this initiative was the result of months of careful planning. Alongside their store, they’ve committed to donating $1 million to local food banks to enhance New York City’s approach to combatting hunger.
The store’s hours may vary, so shoppers are advised to check the website for updates.
Social media posts highlight the variety of free items available, including basic goods like fruits and vegetables, dairy products, bread, as well as popular snacks like Pringles and Oreos.
Interestingly, Polymarket hasn’t offered an explanation for launching this free grocery store.
Just days prior, another grocery owner, George Zoitas of Westside Market, also engaged in a similar initiative, distributing $50 worth of groceries to numerous shoppers in the East Village.
This marketing tactic by both Polymarket and Kalsi could be interpreted as an indirect response to Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s promise to open government-operated grocery stores. During his campaign, he emphasized potential partnerships with local store owners, but complications have surfaced in these plans.
Mamdani seemed to acknowledge Polymarket’s announcement on social media, sharing a photo humorously responding to their post.
