Ponke Meme Coin Partners with RIPNDIP for Blind Box Collectible Release

Simply put

  • Meme coin brand Ponke is set to launch a collection of collectible blind box toys in partnership with the streetwear brand RIPNDIP.
  • The collectibles will feature NFC chips that open up blockchain elements through the Ethereum Layer 2 network.
  • Pre-sales will kick off online on Friday, with the full collection expected to hit RIPNDIP stores and other retailers by April.

For quite some time now, blind box releases in the crypto space have followed a predictable pattern. Typically, there’s a digital offering available via a marketplace, followed later by the physical products. However, the new partnership between the Solana meme coin Ponke and RIPNDIP seems to be shaking things up by prioritizing in-store availability first.

The Ponke x RIPNDIP Blind Box Collectibles are actual physical items that will be sold through RIPNDIP’s established retail channels. The blockchain features are built on Coinbase’s Ethereum layer 2 network, which operates silently after purchase, facilitating ownership verification and digital claims via the NFC chips.

To put it simply, we’re looking at a Web2 product that’s backed by Web3 technology, not the other way around.

“This Ponke x RIPNDIP launch stands out in a landscape often dominated by digital mechanics. It’s crafted as a premium, retail-first product aiming to land directly on store shelves,” explained a representative from the Ponke team. “Blockchain works quietly in the background to extend ownership beyond the initial transaction.”

Collectors can snag sealed physical blind boxes through the RIPNDIP website. The online pre-sale starts Friday at noon ET and lasts for 72 hours. The general retail availability is set for April. Each box will contain a collectible figure, with rarity determined entirely offline, meaning no cryptocurrency wallet is needed for checkout.

After making a purchase, owners can tap the NFC chip in their collectible to unlock a digital layer powered by Base, via technology from partner 223. This allows for proof of ownership and claims after purchase without requiring direct interaction with the cryptocurrency infrastructure unless users decide to engage.

This approach highlights how some consumer-centered cryptocurrency projects are trying to onboard users without the direct use of tokens. Brands can rely on tokens for things like provenance and customer loyalty, while easing new users into the experience without overwhelming them from the start.

The special “rare” collectible from this drop is the Lemon Love Bomb figure, which appears in about 1 in every 12 boxes. Most customers will encounter standard odds when buying, but Ponke indicated that “bulk buying options can alter those odds.” Collectors have the choice between single boxes, a 3-box Collector Pack, or a 6-box Whale Pack that includes a rare figure.

Cryptocurrency brands have often struggled to break into mainstream retail without bringing along wallet complications and speculative issues. Similar to how Pudgy Penguins have approached toys, this collaboration anchors the experience in a familiar product and relegates blockchain features to an optional layer after purchase. It raises the question: could cryptocurrencies function more effectively when they aren’t front and center?
