Pope Francis Lauds Gavin Newsom for Moratorium on Death Penalty

ROME — Pope Francis congratulated California Gov. Gavin Newsom on his refusal to carry out the death penalty and for the state’s leadership in fighting climate change, the governor’s office reported.

“I was impressed with how quickly he brought up the issue of the death penalty and how proud he is of the work we’re doing in California,” Newsom said.
