Pope’s Prayers for Peace Amid Ongoing Conflicts
Pope Leo XIV took a moment on Sunday to offer prayers aimed at supporting peace initiatives. While he didn’t specifically address any conflict, President Donald Trump’s recent attempts to broker peace in the Russian-Ukraine war certainly caught attention over the weekend.
“Let us pray that efforts to end war and promote peace may bear fruit, and that the common interests of the people may always be first in negotiations,” the Pope expressed.
Historically, Pope Leo has sought an end to the Ukraine war, having previously discussed the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin back in June. During that conversation, he had offered the Vatican’s services as a mediator for the conflict.
Putin, while thanking the Pope, argued that Ukraine was escalating tensions and engaging in acts of sabotage within Russian territory.
Some Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, asserted that the Vatican is not a suitable venue for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Lavrov remarked that it would be inappropriate for Orthodox nations to address issues through Catholic channels.
“I don’t think it’s comfortable for the Vatican itself to host delegations from two Orthodox countries in such a situation,” he noted.
Further, Russian representatives said that using the Vatican for peace talks was problematic since it’s—well—essentially surrounded by Italy, which is part of NATO.
In July, Pope Leo reiterated his willingness to host peace talks when he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky seemed more open to this idea compared to the Russians, despite stating intentions to address the Kremlin directly.
“The proposal to hold a meeting at the Vatican leadership level will remain completely possible, with the goal of halting Russian invasions and achieving stable, lasting, and true peace,” Zelensky stated.
He mentioned that Moscow was the only party consistently rejecting these proposals, having dismissed all previous peace efforts.
Later that month, the Pope also discussed the situation in Ukraine with Anthony, a prominent official from the Russian Orthodox Church. This conversation took place amidst the backdrop of ongoing global conflicts.
Anthony, representing the church’s external relations, aligned with Patriarch Kirill, who supports Putin’s actions in Ukraine, framing it as a metaphysical struggle against evil.
This suggests a stark contrast to Pope Leo’s appeal for peace. After declining the Pope’s mediation offer, the Kremlin proposed that their conflict could be framed as a fight for “religious freedom” for the true followers of Ukrainian Orthodox Churches.
