Pope Leo XIV, born in America, being chosen is ‘a significant honor’ for the US, according to Trump.

Donald Trump expressed his excitement on social media after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevast as Pope Leo XIV, noting it was a “great honor” for the American-born cardinal to take the papacy. He mentioned that it was significant and thrilling for the U.S. to have its first pope.

After the white smoke heralded the momentous occasion from the Vatican, Trump shared his congratulations, stating, “What excitement and what a wonderful honor for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

In comments to White House reporters, Trump admitted he was somewhat surprised by the choice of Cardinal Prevost but emphasized the importance of this selection for America. He also mentioned that there have already been discussions with the Vatican and expressed hope for a future visit with the new Pope, though details on timing were unclear.

Vice President J.D. Vance, also a Catholic convert, joined in extending his congratulations, celebrating the historic election of the first American Pope.

Pope Leo XIV, who was born in Chicago, previously served as a bishop under Pope Francis. Notably, New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan was considered a possible successor as well.

In his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV urged Catholics to act as missionaries and foster peace, inviting them to engage in dialogue and build connections with “all people.”
