While on a flight to Angola as part of a 10-day tour of Africa, the pope mentioned that some reports about his comments were “not accurate in every respect.” He clarified that his speech had been prepared two weeks prior to any remarks made by President Trump regarding him or his message of peace. Reuters noted that the pope’s statements were not aimed at Trump.

“It just happened to appear as if I were trying to debate the president, which isn’t something I’m really interested in,” the pope reportedly stated.

Media Speculation on Vatican Relations

Vice President J.D. Vance thanked the pope for clarifying the misunderstandings, expressing that while media narratives often escalate conflict, real disagreements are typically more nuanced. “Pope Leo is preaching the Gospel as it should be, addressing the pressing moral issues we face today,” he noted. Vance emphasized the importance of applying these moral principles to turbulent times, extending hope for the president’s prayers to be answered. A few days earlier, Vance had suggested that the Vatican should stick to moral discussions, allowing the president to lead public policy decisions.

This exchange came after Trump labeled Pope Leo XIV as “terrible” on foreign policy, criticizing the pope for comments about the United States’ and Israel’s stance on Iran. Trump remarked on social media, highlighting the fear faced by religious leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic when worship was restricted, and expressed his disapproval of a pope who could condone Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

During an address in Cameroon, the pope spoke about the urgent need for a significant shift toward fostering human fraternity. He acknowledged the detrimental impact of tyrants but also recognized the many who strive for cooperation and peace.

He condemned those who exploit religion for gain, stating, “Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political benefits.” This stance, he noted, drags sacred matters into unseemly realms.
