Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace at Youth Gathering

Pope Leo XIV addressed over a million young Catholics on Sunday, encouraging them to embrace peace and highlighting their role as “a sign that another world is possible.”

The Chicago-born Pope delivered a passionate message during a massive event southeast of Rome, wrapping up the week-long Jubilee of Youth celebration.

“We are closer than ever to young people who suffer from the most serious evil caused by other humans,” he shared in his blessing.

He expressed solidarity with youth from Gaza and Ukraine, saying, “We are with the youth of Gaza. We are with the youth of Ukrainians, with the people of all lands where blood flows through war.”

The gathering saw a diverse crowd, including 7,000 priests and 450 bishops, alongside countless young followers, many of whom camped out overnight to attend the event.

“My young brothers and sisters, you are a sign that another world is possible. A world of fraternity and friendship where conflict is resolved through dialogue, rather than by weapons,” he stated.

The lively atmosphere was enhanced by young attendees singing hymns, even amid rain. The Pope urged them to “spread witnesses of your enthusiasm and your faith.”

“Where you are, you are eager to be great, holiness,” he encouraged. “Don’t settle for less. You will see the light of the gospel growing every day, around you.”

Unfortunately, the week was marred by the deaths of two young pilgrims, with one reported to have died of cardiac arrest. The circumstances surrounding the second death remain unclear.

Despite the rain, enthusiasm ran high among the crowd. Soemil Rios, a 20-year-old from Puerto Rico, expressed, “At least we were a little covered, but we were still a little wet. It was cold, but we woke up to the beautiful sun and views. It was wonderful and special to be part of this historic moment despite the challenges.”

Looking ahead, the next gathering with the Pope is World Youth Day, scheduled for August 3-8, 2027, in Seoul, South Korea.
