Pope Leo XIV’s First Easter Blessing Calls for Peace

Pope Leo XIV delivered his inaugural Easter blessing on Sunday, urging peace and reminding listeners not to ignore the countless lives lost in violent conflicts globally.

Addressing a crowd in St. Peter’s Square—reported to be over 50,000—he offered the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. In his heartfelt address, Leo emphasized the need for hope in a world marred by violence and urged people to resist becoming desensitized to the suffering of others.

“On this joyous day, let us renounce all aspirations for power through conflict and seek the Lord’s mercy to heal our war-torn world,” he said.

He also reminded his audience that “the power of Christ’s resurrection is wholly nonviolent.” Further reflecting on Easter, he expressed a desire for transformation by Christ’s immense love and encouraged those with weapons to lay them down. His plea was for leaders to choose dialogue over dominance, and for a mutual encounter rather than a struggle for control.

Quoting former Pope Francis, Leo acknowledged the “globalization of indifference,” highlighting a severe yearning for violence in various conflicts around the globe.

During the blessing, he wished everyone a happy Easter in ten languages, concluding with a rendition of Regina Coeli.

Earlier that day, Leo celebrated his first Easter Mass, during which he called on the faithful to remain hopeful amidst the ongoing violence and destruction caused by war. “This song of hope is crucial as we confront widespread suffering,” he remarked.

As the conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran progresses and as Russia continues aggressions in Ukraine, Leo has consistently advocated for an end to hostilities.
