Portland mayor reasserts sanctuary policies following violent conflict with anti-ICE protesters

Portland Mayor Upholds Sanctuary Policy Amid Protests

Portland’s Mayor, Keith Wilson, has reiterated his support for the city’s sanctuary policies following a night marked by violence outside the local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center.

Wilson, a Democrat, emphasized that the local police would not cooperate with ICE. Instead, they agreed to collaborate with Portland police in addressing violent confrontations that occurred on Labor Day outside the facility on South Macadam Avenue.

Videos emerged showing anti-ICE protesters clashing with law enforcement, who reportedly used munitions to disperse the crowd.

“We will not engage in ongoing federal immigration enforcement,” Wilson stated. “That’s the aim of our sanctuary city. The governor supports this goal to ensure we do not cooperate with ICE in any way.”

The mayor discussed his administration’s efforts to coordinate with state and federal partners to handle potential conflicts. “We’re engaging with everyone in the city, coordinating with council representatives to figure out how to protect our citizens responsibly,” he remarked. “There’s a tabletop exercise planned to evaluate our response to this overreach.”

During this exercise, participants will navigate scenarios and test emergency response strategies. Meanwhile, the Portland Police Department has distanced itself from the events occurring outside the ICE facility.

Back in July, Portland’s progressive city council was looking into options to remove ICE from detention centers that have become flashpoints for violent confrontations.

Protests outside the facility have been tumultuous since June, with instances where demonstrators attempted to obstruct law enforcement, prompting the use of rubber bullets and tear gas. Footage from the most recent protest showed protesters burning flags before law enforcement intervened to clear the area.

In the chaos, shouts such as “You’re a sad excuse for humans!” echoed as officers moved in. Some protesters were seen using riot shields for protection against the projectiles fired by police. The status of any arrests made during these confrontations remains unclear.

“We recognize this as a significant threat to ICE officers, but that won’t deter us,” ICE Deputy Director Madison Xiahan told a news outlet regarding the recent clashes. “We will continue pursuing those individuals who have caused distress in our communities for the past several years and ensure our personnel have the necessary resources to carry out their duties.”
