Portland WNBA team reportedly lets go of president Inky Son

The WNBA’s Portland franchise has reportedly dismissed its president, Inky Son, just three weeks before the team planned to reveal its official branding. This decision came amid what has been described as serious “growing pains” and tumultuous preparations, according to recent reports.

On June 20, the WNBA Portland X social media account hinted at a significant announcement set for July 15, presumably tied to the team’s name unveiling.

Interestingly, the league hasn’t provided any immediate comments regarding the reported firing of Son. She was appointed as the first employee for the Portland franchise on April 1, having previously served as the chief administrative officer for the National Basketball Players Association.

When Son was hired, she expressed her excitement about revitalizing the WNBA presence in Portland, stating, “This is an incredible opportunity to help bring back the WNBA franchise to Portland, which has already shown its love for basketball and support for women’s sports.”

Mike Whitehead, managing director of Raj Sports, which oversees the Portland franchise, had expressed confidence in Son’s potential to lead the organization. He believed her leadership would positively impact both the franchise and the local community.

Son was responsible for overseeing a range of business functions, including marketing, sponsorships, ticket sales, community relations, and other operational areas. It’s certainly a lot to manage, and one wonders how the dynamics shifted so quickly.
