Possible price surge: Reasons why ACA health insurance plans may increase significantly in Arizona this year

Phoenix Health Insurance Premiums on the Rise

Residents of Arizona looking to purchase health insurance through the state’s Affordable Care Act market might be in for a surprise during this year’s open enrollment. While the state agency in charge of regulating insurance companies has indicated a substantial increase—up to 55.3%—the end of federal tax credits that once helped lessen premium costs will mean that folks will likely be paying more out of pocket for their plans.

Matt McGor, a policy analyst at a nonprofit organization focused on insurance policy, notes that many people will indeed feel a considerable shock once they see their monthly health insurance premiums. With the cessation of tax credits, it’s possible for Arizonans to face increases approaching 90% in some cases.

“Most enrollees are going to feel a double whammy, with higher bills and the loss of subsidies that used to help lighten their financial load,” he added. In a recent analysis, he pointed out that various factors are contributing to these increase in premiums. One major reason is the expiration of federal tax credits, which shifts the market dynamics significantly.

Insurance companies are also bracing for an uptick in costs as they expect some younger, healthier members to exit the market. This leaves behind a pool of higher-risk individuals, which in turn raises costs for the insurance providers.

Moreover, rising medical expenses, influenced by tariffs on pharmaceuticals and medical devices, are another factor driving premiums upward. “Many insurers are citing tariffs as a key contributor to next year’s price hikes,” McGor explained.

Additionally, changes to federal ACA policies are likely resulting in consumers facing higher overall insurance expenses. For small business owners and gig workers considering ACA plans, it may be wise to evaluate the potential benefits of employer-sponsored insurance. “Unfortunately, many might find themselves with limited options,” McGor cautioned.

The Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions is advising consumers to shop around this year, as open registration is set to kick off on November 1st.
