Possible starting points for the Rangers' full rebuild ahead of the NHL Olympic break

With team president and general manager Chris Drury signaling a shift for the Rangers’ season and drafting a letter about revamping the roster, it might be worth examining which players could be on the move before the Olympic break and the March 6 trade deadline.

1. Artemi Panarin

During a recent conversation with coach Drury, Panarin learned that the team wouldn’t be offering him an extension. As one of the few notable names facing free agency soon, he’s been at the center of trade discussions throughout the season. Given his value in the Rangers’ lineup, he could bring back a modest return. However, his full no-trade clause gives him significant control over where he goes. It will be crucial for Drury to collaborate with Panarin and his representatives to craft a deal that aligns with his interests.

2. Brennan Osman

Osman has also been mentioned in trade rumors for much of the season, and some think he could benefit from a change of scenery. Selected 16th overall in 2021, he has struggled to make an impact in the NHL, accumulating just 33 games of experience. It seems the fit just hasn’t been right in New York.

3. Carson Soucy

As Soucy plays out the final year of his contract, his $3.25 million cap hit may soon shift. Many teams would likely appreciate having a versatile defenseman who can operate on either side. Compared to last season, he’s performed notably better in his role with the Rangers, and with a third-round pick previously given up to acquire him, the Rangers could find a team in need of defensive support as they head into the playoffs.

4. Alexi Lafreniere

If the Rangers aim to shake things up, moving Lafreniere before his new no-trade clause kicks in for the 2027-28 season could be a strategic move. His standout games, like the three-assist night in the Winter Classic, have been too sporadic. Although he was the top overall pick in 2020, his inability to consistently lead or produce may diminish his trade value. Drury might want to act quickly if a solid offer comes in.

5. Vincent Trocheck

Exploring the center market is on the Rangers’ agenda, especially since quality centers are increasingly sought after. Trocheck has a no-trade clause with a list of 12 teams, making him a valuable asset in this context. With other centers like JT Miller recently appointed captain and Mika Zibanejad having a no-movement clause until the 2029-30 season, Trocheck could potentially fetch a contract that Drury seeks, despite the Rangers currently being thin in the center position.

6. Braden Schneider

Having primarily been a third-pair defenseman for his five seasons in New York, Schneider’s recent performance was less than stellar, especially as he took on a larger role in Adam Fox’s absence. He hasn’t been given much of a chance to solidify a top-four spot unless it followed an injury. With Schneider poised to enter restricted free agency and eligible for arbitration after this season, he might be a candidate worth moving. His addition could bolster the defensive depth for a potential suitor.
