Potential Suspension of Israel from 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying
Qualifying for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup might be impacted in Europe. Reports indicate that UEFA is considering a vote regarding Israel, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
According to the latest updates, a significant number of members within the European football governing body support the idea of halting Israeli teams from participating in international competitions. This would affect both national and club teams from Israel. Should UEFA proceed with the suspension, Israel would not only be barred from World Cup qualifying matches, but it would also exclude them from other international tournaments.
Presently, Israel is involved in Group I qualifying alongside Norway, Italy, Moldova, and Estonia. With three matches to go, they are currently in third place, and qualifying is set to continue in about two weeks. Due to safety concerns, UEFA has already mandated that Israel host their games at an alternative venue in Hungary, with one more home match slated for November. If a vote to suspend them occurs before the international window in October, Israel’s participation in the qualifiers could be immediately terminated along with the cancellation of any forthcoming matches.
This potential suspension impacts Israeli clubs as well, preventing them from competing in European tournaments. Maccabi Tel Aviv, for example, is currently engaged in the UEFA Europa League, having secured a victory against the Greek team Paok. Their next game is on October 2nd, where they will host Dinamo Zagreb. Due to the suspension, Maccabi Tel Aviv has had to relocate all home games for the group stage to Serbia’s TSC Arena.
Calls to suspend Israel from soccer and other sports have intensified in light of the military actions in Gaza, which have reportedly led to numerous civilian casualties. Countries like Spain and Norway have been particularly vocal, urging UEFA to take action, while accusations of genocide during military strikes have also surfaced. In fact, the UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, even allowed a protest banner at the recent Italian Super Cup, emphasizing messages against the killing of civilians.
If UEFA moves forward with suspending Israel, it’s likely there will be pushback from other entities. Current reports suggest uncertainty about whether FIFA will follow suit, similar to their actions against Russia in 2022. The U.S. Department of State has reportedly expressed a strong stance against any ban of Israeli teams from the World Cup, although Israel seems determined to maintain its eligibility. The top teams in Group I may directly qualify for the March UEFA World Cup playoffs. Israel’s next match could prove crucial as they face key opponents Norway and Italy in the upcoming qualifying rounds.
No national team has yet refused to play against Israel, but Norway has decided to donate proceeds from their upcoming match against Israel on October 11th to support humanitarian efforts in Gaza. There has also been some expressed concern regarding future encounters with Israeli teams. Should UEFA vote to suspend Israel in the coming weeks, that may shift pressure onto FIFA regarding World Cup qualifiers scheduling.
