Potential breakout players for the 2025 Falcons, Panthers, Saints, and Bucs

NFC South can feel like the Mad Max of the NFL. It’s chaotic, unpredictable, and there are bound to be some explosive moments. At the end of it all, someone will claim the division title, but honestly, the journey is what makes it entertaining. The Buccaneers have held a strong position in the division for the last four years, yet one can’t help but wonder if the Falcons are finally poised to take their shot. Will the Panthers manage to rise above their recent struggles, especially now that Blythe Young is back? And what about the Saints? Can they hold their ground? But perhaps the biggest question lingering is: which player will emerge as a star from this division? In 2025, I took a look at breakout players from each NFC South team for you.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Penix Jr., QB

I found myself torn between choosing Penix Jr. and DB Clark Phillips III, but ultimately I went with the quarterback. Earlier in the offseason, I had the chance to see how Penix performed, and I was struck by his ability to execute plays effectively while steering clear of major mistakes. With the offensive setup the Falcons have, particularly with hopes for a standout year from WR Drake London, Penix has a real shot to grow into a well-rounded passer. Sure, he still needs to work on his short-range accuracy and getting comfortable with inside throws, but the potential in his arm definitely puts him in the conversation for breakout stars.

Carolina Panthers: Jalen Coker, WR

It’s tricky to gauge the dynamics within the Panthers’ wide receiver group, but it seems essential to include Jalen Coker as a target. By almost every measure, Coker was one of the top rookie receivers in the league. He ranked high across the season, particularly in EPA per route run among Panthers wideouts. Last season, Coker also made some tough, physical catches, demonstrating reliability that’s not common among young players. As Blythe Young continues to improve, having someone like Coker as a primary target could really boost both his and the Panthers’ offensive chances.

New Orleans Saints: Taliese Fuaga, OT

The Saints have committed significant resources to their offensive line, and I truly believe Fuaga could shine as a breakout player heading into 2025. Despite a rocky previous season for New Orleans, Fuaga has shown impressive skills in both the run and passing game. His agility in the zone running scheme stands out. With the possibility of moving him to the right side of the line, especially after acquiring Kelvin Banks in the first round, Fuaga could really thrive. I’m looking forward to seeing how he develops in 2025.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Yaya Diaby, Edge

Could you believe me if I said Yaya Diaby finished in the top 10 for pressures? Over the past season, he has transformed into a formidable pass rusher, combining strength with finesse against offensive linemen. Plus, he’s solid when it comes to run defense, rarely losing his hold in Tampa’s defensive lineup. However, he needs to improve his ability to finish plays — that’s where he could really break out. Among pass rushers with significant pressure statistics, he has one of the lowest sack rates. Perhaps with a bit of luck and consistency, he can push himself into top-tier conversations among edge rushers.
