Chicago White Sox Secure Top Pick in MLB Draft Lottery
The Chicago White Sox have been embracing their basketball-inspired theme with a new uniform that pays homage to the Bulls. Following a successful run in the draft lottery, they’re now gearing up for what many hope will be a major turnaround.
On Tuesday night, the White Sox won the first overall pick for the 2026 MLB Draft, giving them the chance to select Roch Cholowski, a 20-year-old shortstop out of UCLA who’s been making waves.
Cholowski is at the pinnacle of the 2026 MLB prospect rankings, noted in his scouting report as possibly the “best all-around college shortstop prospect since Troy Tulowitzki.” He finished an impressive sophomore season with a .353 batting average, a 1.190 OPS, alongside 23 home runs and 74 RBIs. His talent has even earned him recognition as Baseball America’s College Player of the Year for 2025.
Being the son of a former minor leaguer and a seasoned scout certainly played in his favor. Cholowski caught the eye of scouts early on, thanks in part to his dual-sport background at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, a school known for producing talent like Cody Bellinger.
His scouting report emphasizes his exceptional infield skills, suggesting that he resembles a player ready for the big leagues. After a few tough seasons, where the White Sox didn’t make the playoffs since 2021 and faced over 100 losses in three straight years, hope is starting to rekindle for the South Side team.
In 2024, the White Sox’s record saw a staggering 121 losses, making it one of the worst in MLB history—only the 1899 Cleveland Spiders had a more dismal season. Yet, with Cholowski potentially added to the mix, the team could see a refreshing change, especially paired with Colson Montgomery, another promising shortstop who bagged 21 home runs in just 71 games during his rookie season.
However, if the White Sox decide to explore other options, names like Fort Worth Christian’s Grady Emerson, Alabama’s Justin LeBron, Jacob Lombardo from Gulliver Prep, and Drew Burress from Georgia Tech also top the prospect list. Additionally, the highest-rated pitcher in the ranks is Carson Boremon from Southside Christian, who stands seventh overall.
The 2026 MLB Draft is set to take place in Philadelphia during All-Star Week, specifically on July 11-12, with several teams, including the Rays, Twins, Giants, and Pirates, vying for prime positions in the draft order.
