Secretary of Education Issues Warning to Harvard Over DEI Policies

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has cautioned Harvard University that failure to halt its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives deemed incompatible with federal law could lead to severe consequences.

During an appearance with Miranda Devine on Wednesday, McMahon expressed, “I’m certainly aware that there’s an ongoing investigation, that we risk losing federal funding for our research and programs, and that we could potentially face legal action from the Department of Justice.”

Earlier reports indicated that President Donald Trump implemented an executive order to eliminate DEI frameworks in universities shortly after his inauguration last January.

Additionally, the Department of Education has initiated an investigation into Harvard’s alleged use of anti-Semitism and racially biased admissions practices. The Justice Department has also filed a lawsuit against the university, accusing it of hiding admissions data.

Nevertheless, McMahon noted that further investigations are on the horizon to ensure Harvard’s accountability.

“Parents and students nationwide take comfort in knowing we have leaders like Secretary Linda McMahon who will stand firm,” stated PragerU CEO Marissa Streit. “President Trump was right to nominate her, believing she has the courage to advocate for America’s students.”

Streit emphasized, “Secretary McMahon’s recent warning reinforces that she is precisely what students need to combat discriminatory practices at Harvard and similar institutions. Even if it makes her unpopular, it’s clear she’s committed to doing what’s right for our children.”

“Families want clarity on their leaders’ values. We look for more leaders who share Secretary McMahon’s resolve,” she added.

In May 2025, the Department of Health and Human Services withdrew $2.2 billion in federal funding from Harvard, attributing the decision to the university’s noncompliance with anti-discrimination laws. Although a judge required the reinstatement of those funds, the Trump administration appealed.

McMahon addressed this issue, stating, “It’s not the intent of the federal government to withdraw funding, as our research universities contribute significantly to innovative research and advancements.”

“We want to ensure research continues, but they must recognize the need to operate within legal boundaries,” she added.

Meanwhile, institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have dismantled their DEI offices.

McMahon remarked, “I sincerely hope many realize the error in pursuing those initiatives.”

She noted, “We’ve seen positive outcomes from our actions, like the establishment of civics programs on numerous campuses, focusing on American history rather than ideology.”

However, she pointed out, “If you look at it objectively, many have merely rebranded themselves and implemented superficial changes to navigate through the current political climate.”
