A tsunami warning was lifted Thursday morning after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck northern California. The earthquake occurred around 10:44 a.m. PT about 30 miles off the coast of Humboldt County in the Eureka area. It hit much of the region, including San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento, Reno, and southern Oregon. Shortly after, a tsunami warning was issued and residents of Northern California evacuate Go to higher ground.
As reported by Los Angeles TimesBART, the San Francisco Bay Area commuter rail system, has temporarily suspended service on the undersea Transbay Tube between San Francisco and Oakland in light of the tsunami warning. Visitors to the San Francisco Zoo were also ordered to evacuate because it was offshore.
“Visitors have been evacuated, animals have been secured, and staff have been moved to higher ground,” the zoo said in a statement. Posted on social media.
While the coast was being cleared, schools were also dismissed early after evacuation.
Olivia Cobian, innkeeper at the Gingerbread Mansion in the historic town of Ferndale, said the building, built in 1895, “looked like a war zone.”
“The fireplace is flying forward,” she said. “Lifted claw foot bathtub [their mounts] And then it turned over. This is crazy. ”
At the time, she had just finished giving a tour of the inn to a third-grade class at a local elementary school.
“They were just walking back to school,” she said, adding, “Thank God.”
The New Post reported that the warning was lifted around midday before the expected wave hit.
The shaking occurred amid reports of an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or higher with an epicenter nearby.
In 2022, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near Eureka, killing at least two people and injuring 11 others.
