Democrats Brace for Midterms Amid Scepticism

As Democrats anticipate a significant “blue wave” during the upcoming Election Day, analysts at CNN are tempering those expectations. According to Harry Enten, recent polls indicate that the Democratic performance is lagging compared to previous midterms against Republican presidents.

“It’s not a guarantee,” he stated. “Whether you believe these pollsters or not, it’s far from a guarantee at this point.”

Current general Congressional polling puts Democrats ahead by 5 percentage points. However, it’s worth noting that at the same time in the 2006 midterms, they held an 11-point lead, and in 2018, it was 10 points.

“Now the Democratic lead is somewhat tenuous,” Enten remarked. “Sure, Democrats have the advantage, but it’s too early to declare victory.”

He also pointed to several indicators suggesting the anticipated blue wave may be diminishing.

“This isn’t just one poll showing these results; multiple polling organizations indicate a lack of wave momentum, especially considering the president’s current approval ratings,” he explained.

In three separate polls that Enten analyzed, Democrats did not gain support in January and February compared to earlier polling from the previous months. They saw a 1% decline in the NBC poll, a 3% drop in the Marquette Law School poll, and they were tied in the Ipsos poll.

Enten further argued that redistricting in states controlled by Republicans is reducing the Democrats’ perceived edge.

“We believe Democrats ideally need a 3- to 4-point lead in national polling to feel secure,” he stressed. “But averages indicate they’re right on the edge. That certainly isn’t a guarantee. If you trust these polling firms, the outlook remains uncertain.”

Recent estimates, shared by Enten, suggest Democrats face a 78% likelihood of securing the House, while Republicans hold a 57% chance of keeping their Senate majority.

Enten shared a video on Monday detailing these insights, which attracted considerable attention online.
