‘Prepared to Lose Friends:’ Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Explains Why He Just Donated $300K to Donald Trump

In a move that could cost him friends and business opportunities, Sequoia Capital partner and former Hillary Clinton supporter Sean Maguire has donated $300,000 to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

in Post to X (formerly Twitter)Although Maguire supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and abstained from voting in the 2020 election, he believes this upcoming election is one of the most important of his lifetime. Despite the potential backlash, he refuses to be silenced by cancel culture and has chosen to publicly support Trump. Maguire is a partner at Sequoia Capital, one of Silicon Valley’s most influential venture capital firms.

Maguire’s “radicalization” to the center began after a U.S. C-17 fighter jet struck and killed an Afghan at Kabul International Airport on August 16, 2021. A veteran of Afghanistan, he believes the Biden administration’s withdrawal was a strategic blunder that sacrificed stability and a key airbase for political gain. Maguire also argues that the Biden administration’s foreign policy has been disastrous, leading to global destabilization and the outbreak of two major wars. He criticizes the administration’s approach to Iran, saying it has benefited Iran despite attacks on U.S. troops and allies.

Maguire highlighted the double standards and loafers (using the law as a political weapon) that Trump faces, citing examples such as the classified documents case, the border wall controversy, and corruption charges. He believes the cases against Trump are unfair and politically motivated. Although he disagrees with Republicans on issues such as abortion, he believes Trump and the Republican Party are better on most issues in the country, including crime, homelessness, and immigration. He also expressed concern about the far-left and Antifa.

Regarding the 2020 election and January 6th, Maguire believes there was extreme election interference, but does not condone the protests at the Capitol, arguing that the correct democratic response is to accept the results, ensure a peaceful transition of power, and work to prevent future interference.

Maguire concluded his post with:

Speak up. Don’t be silent. Freedom of expression is worthless if we are afraid to use it. We cannot let cancel culture win.

There is no greater country in the world than America. But America has had a difficult decade. America is blessed with a strong Constitution, abundant natural resources, and a diverse people. The way out of this is to focus on our strengths: liberalism and hard work. We need to start building again.

I wish President Trump the best of luck.
