El Salvador President Naive Buquere told a White House reporter on Monday that he would not return Salvadoran citizens who had recently been deported by the United States.
There have been protests from Democrats and mainstream media against the deportation of Kilmer Armando Abrego Garcia. Garcia was in the United States illegally for almost 20 years. The US government says he belongs to the MS-13 gang. Garcia was handed over to El Salvador and placed in the national terrorist confinement center.
“They are sick. These are sick people.”
The Supreme Court ruled that the US must encourage Garcia’s return to the United States, but the Salvador government must first agree to hand over Garcia. Garcia claimed in 2019 that he was afraid of the MS-13 rival, 18th Avenue gang, but both gangs reportedly pose no longer a national security threat within El Salvador.
When asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins if the government would return to Garcia to the US, Bukele said that it was impossible and such a question was ridiculous.
“How can I get him back to the US? I’m smuggling him into the US? Of course I’m not going to do that. That… This, the question seems ridiculous. How can I smuggle terrorists into the US? I don’t have the power to bring him back to the US.”
When CNN reporters asked if they were to release Garcia from CECOT, Bukele said he would not release the criminal.
“So we don’t really like to release terrorists into our country. We have only transformed the world’s murder capital into the safest country in the Western Hemisphere, and you want us to free us so that we can return to the world’s murder capital.”
Gestures to CNN and other media outlets, Trump said, “They want to release criminals in our country. They are sick. These are sick people.”
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller previously said Garcia has no legal right to stay in the United States, and what he does with his citizens depends on other countries.
“For example, if 100,000 people return to Haiti, should we open a case file for every 100,000 people and ask about the housing situation every day? What is their healthcare situation? What do they need? … These people chose to break into us.
