House Democrats in the “progressive “squad” have argued that the Trump administration can quickly jail Americans for a variety of non-criminal reasons, regardless of their legal status.
D-Mass. Rep. Ayanna Pressley made comments after visiting university students Rumeysa Ozturk and Mahmoud Khalil. Both are being detained in immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) facilities after being accused of supporting the pro-Hama beliefs. Both are legally in the country, but not US citizens either. Halil is a legal permanent resident and Oztak is on a student visa.
“If people who could have this happen in Donald Trump’s America are marginalized and “other” people could become you, this could be you. This could be you to practice diversity, equity and inclusion. This could be you to read banned books.” “It’s sharp about Mahmoud and Lumesa, because they are some of the most well-known cases, but they affect everyone who calls this country home.”

She claimed that Halil and Oztalk were in severe tension in the hands of the authorities there.
“This is torture. They are sleep deprived. They are denied their basic essence. Their humanity has been completely erased,” Presley said. “And everyone with conscience – this is not about Democrats or Republicans now. It’s about right and wrong, good and evil. And the people in Congress need to join us, put pressure on us, demand freedom, justice, justice, and justice, and keep saying their names to demand that Le Mesa visa be restored.”
Pressley also claimed that Ozturk had “removed her hijab” by “one of the nurses” at the facility.

“Religious accommodation is not respected. The basic human needs are not met. She spoke about the culture of blackmailing educated women and troublemakers who often follow her. Still, even on her face, she still does her research.
Meanwhile, like Pressley, McGovern told reporters, “If the government can oppose people like them and imprison them without legitimate procedures, in this case there’s nothing to stop the government from following you.”
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called the allegations regarding Ozulk’s detention “explicitly false.”

Both Ozturk and Khalil have been accused of publishing pro-Hamas statements by the Trump administration, while registering with Tufts University and Columbia University, respectively.
A progressive trip to Massachusetts comes after several Democrats travelled to El Salvador to secure the return of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, an exiled illegal immigrant who married a US citizen who accused the Trump administration of having ties with MS-13.
The Supreme Court held that Abrego Garcia had been mistakenly deported, and ordered the US government to promote his release, although El Salvador has no plans to return him.

A DHS spokesman told Fox News Digital when he contacted the facility in Basil, “Mr. Ozteruk had been in touch with his legal counsel within hours of his arrival at the facility. On the day he arrived, one of his lawyers contacted the facility and had already attended the meeting with the other lawyers.
“Daily inspections are conducted by facility managers and there are no reports or documented complaints about rodent activity. The facility maintains normal pest control services in accordance with Performance-Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS). The State Department has made specific decisions regarding the cancellation of visas when individuals pose a threat to national security,” the spokesman said.
When contacted for comment on Presley’s comments about Trump, White House spokesman Kush Desai said, “Wow, Democrats are hysterical about President Trump. What else is new?”
