Tragic Incident Involving Mexican Naval Ship
Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum expressed her sorrow over the loss of two sailors who died in a tragic incident involving a naval vessel that collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday.
Reportedly, the Cuauhtémoc, with its towering 150-foot mast, caused significant damage during the incident. The ship, which was part of a training academy, struck the bridge, injuring over 20 individuals, 19 of whom sought medical attention.
On Sunday, President Sinbaum conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased sailors. “We are heartbroken over the loss of two members of the crew from the Cuauhtémoc training vessel in this tragic accident in New York Harbor. Our thoughts and support are with their families,” she stated.
She noted that the Navy, along with local authorities, is managing the care of the injured. Additionally, the Mexican ambassador in New York, along with U.S. and Mexican consul generals, have extended their support to the Navy during this difficult time.
“We appreciate Mayor Eric Adams for his assistance to our citizens. We are closely monitoring the situation, and the Navy will provide further updates,” Sinbaum added.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision. Initial reports indicated that the ship had recently departed from a pier in Manhattan and was not intentionally heading towards the bridge. According to the New York Police Department’s Special Operations Chief Wilson Alambores, mechanical issues may have led to a loss of power for the ship’s pilots, though this information remains preliminary. Video footage revealed that a tugboat was in proximity to the Cuauhtémoc at the time of the accident.
The Cuauhtémoc, launched in 1982, is approximately 297 feet long and 40 feet wide. The ship’s main mast stands at an impressive height of 160 feet.
