President Trump Honors ‘Heroic’ Service Dogs On K-9 Veterans Day

On Thursday, President Donald Trump issued a statement honoring National K-9 Veterans Day, celebrating dogs with a key role in supporting first responders and service members.

“Dogs are not only human best friends, but also provide relationships and loyalty, but also parents who instinctively protect their loved ones with unwavering dedication,” Trump wrote.

“On National K-9 Veterans Day, First Lady and I will join our country to protect our citizens and our hometowns, paying tribute to the dedicated service of our working dogs serving alongside our military and law enforcement,” he continued.

The K-9 Corps was established on March 13th.thfollowing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942. 13th March is now recognized as National K-9 Veterans Day, celebrating the active duty of over 50,000 police and military dogs, along with those he has served in the past.

“These heroic dogs use their unique abilities to perform a variety of important functions that help reduce the risks pose to men and women in uniform. From carrying messages and laying telegraph wires to detecting explosives and acting as guard and patrol dogs, MWDS (military dogs) have a renowned history of supporting the world's largest combat power when carrying out missions.”

President Trump praised prominent K-9s like Conan, who played a role in the operation that led to the death of terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“Conan, the military dog ​​of the operational detachment of the 1st Special Forces, played an important role in eliminating Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the world's number one terrorist leader. Conan chased the terrorists into a dead-end tunnel where he was trapped, and he met a legitimate end mise. Many of our brave and most accomplished soldiers were involved in the assault that put this evil ISIS leader on trial, and Conan worked bravely on their side.”

“Conan has left American staff not lost to surgery, and we have further demonstrated that the K-9 played an important role in protecting national security,” Trump added.

Additionally, the White House has posted a photo of Conan with President Trump in his oval office since his first term. Conan was previously awarded a medal and plaque for his efforts.

“After Conan retired, he was hired by his former handler and passed away in 2023 after years of fun walks and peaceful naps,” Trump's message said.

“There was also Cairo, a member of the US Navy Seal Team 6, who took part in the Osama bin Laden attack. And Rex saved countless lives by detecting explosives in the battle in Iraq,” the message continued. “These dogs, along with many others, illustrate the extraordinary courage and dedication to help our military officers.”

“As a nation, we will continue to support our working dogs who faithfully protect Americans and our way of life.”
