A waste of time.
That was how one summarized a Thursday news conference featuring Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and Louisville Police Chief Jacqueline Gwynn Villarroel.
The trial lasted about 12 minutes, with the mayor and chief refusing to answer any questions. It’s understandable why, to allow for the legal process, but the case involves a high-profile defendant involved in a bizarre crime.
Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested by Officer Brian Gillis in the early hours of May 17, called it a “big misunderstanding” after the second round of the PGA Championship.
Scheffler’s lawyer, Steve Romines, also maintains that Scheffler did nothing wrong.
Nevertheless, three key points emerged from Thursday’s press conference.
First, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) is not dropping the charges against Scheffler. He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Monday, June 3. After that, Scheffler will travel from Louisville to Columbus, Ohio to play in the annual Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament.
LMPD then announced it would release two videos along with the transparency report. One video is from the dashboard of a police car and the other is from a utility pole across the street from Valhalla Golf Club.
Both videos show it Scheffler has done nothing wrongwhich is consistent with his lawyer’s statement.
NEW: Here’s the relevant portion of the video released this morning by Louisville Metro Police.
Scotty is seen entering the parking lot and police officers are seen chasing the car and banging on the window. Scotty immediately stopped the car.

And ultimately, Louisiana State Police announced that they would be disciplining Gillis internally because he had not turned on his body camera footage.
Yet Louisville police and the mayor of Louisville did not need to hold a press conference to release video of what happened, nor did they need to talk about how to proceed through the legal process.
Rather, it was a waste of time, and as the video evidence shows, is somewhat consistent with this whole debacle in the first place.
