Efforts to reshape Congressional boundaries in Texas are ramping up as the state legislature pushes forward with a new map.
President Trump has voiced support for the Republican strategy to secure five additional seats ahead of the midterms in 2026.
In a counter-move, numerous Texas Democrats have left the state, seeking refuge in more liberal areas to prevent a quorum and delay the legislative vote.
GOP members have called on the FBI to assist in getting the absent Democrats back to Texas. Those who exit the state face daily fines of $500, but Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has warned that lawmakers could be indicted if they raise funds to cover these penalties.
A number of Texas Democrats have reportedly traveled to California, while others have moved to states like New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a special election will be held this November regarding the district theory.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is set to participate in NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where job-related issues and Democratic responses are likely to come up.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that Democratic legislators may be absent for an extended period, hinting they could remain away until 2027 or 2028 due to recurring special sessions with the same agenda.
On the international front, Trump announced plans for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the meeting, they are expected to address territorial exchanges, a proposal that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky notably rejected earlier this week.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine won’t reward Russia for its actions, stressing the need for peace for his people.
Reports have surfaced that Putin delivered a ceasefire proposal to Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkov, in Moscow. European officials have since established conditions that a ceasefire must precede any further discussions.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other high-ranking officials held discussions in Kent, England, to strategize next steps toward achieving a peace agreement in Eastern Europe.
Lammy reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine as efforts continue for a just and lasting peace.
Vance will appear on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to talk about the meeting with European officials and administration efforts towards a Ukraine-Russia peace deal.
These topics, among others, are likely to feature in the upcoming Sunday shows.
