Previously deported Guatemalan man convicted of U.S. crimes arrested in New York

A Guatemalan man who was deported before he was convicted of committing a crime in the United States was arrested in New York over the weekend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Wednesday.

Yoni Wilfredo Gregorio Ortiz, 44, was arrested Sunday by a New York City ice enforcement and removal operations officer in the village of Airmont in Rockland County.

At the time of his arrest, he had a prominent warrant to drive while he was drunk.

Gregorio Ortiz was first arrested by US Border Patrol agents for illegally entering the United States on December 10, 2012, according to ICE. He was processed the following day for quick removal and sent back to Guatemala on January 10, 2023.

He illegally re-entered the United States on an unknown date without an inspection by an immigration officer.

“Gregorio not only does its immigration laws in our country, as evidenced by illegal return after it was previously removed, but it also shows a complete disregard for our criminal law,” said William Joyce, director of field offices at Ice Ero New York City. “Ice New York City continues to prioritize public safety by arresting and eliminating illegal foreign criminals from our community.”

Gregorio Ortiz is held at ICE at the Orange County Jail in Gossen, New York.
