Tragic Death of Ecuadorian Priest During Sermon
Over the weekend, a Catholic priest in Ecuador died unexpectedly while delivering a sermon on the transient nature of life during a livestreamed Mass.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, aged 53, served the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and was based at the Perpetuo Socorro church in Guayaquil, Guayas. This religious order, known as the Redemptorist Order, has been active in Ecuador since 1870, having been founded in Italy in 1732, as noted by local news sources.
On Saturday, while Father Sánchez Molinari was conducting a Mass, a heavy wooden crucifix positioned behind him unexpectedly fell and struck him on the head. Local healthcare responders pronounced him dead hours later. The incident was broadcast live, capturing the moment the crucifix fell from the main altar onto the priest as he celebrated the Eucharist.
Just before the tragic event, Father Sánchez Molinari shared some deep reflections with the congregation. He remarked, “one day, all of us here will die,” echoing Jesus Christ’s message about prioritizing divine matters over worldly concerns. He urged those present to consider how they allocate their time, saying, “God is who comes first, before money, before work, and before the activities of our family and our home.” He highlighted that many often get absorbed in distractions like phones and movies, forgetting to focus on God.
He elaborated, “The quality time we devote to God… to our families, that time is time well spent.” Just moments later, he invited the attendees to recite the Apostles’ Creed, but the prayer was cut short as chaos erupted following the falling crucifix, with desperate calls for help audible in the footage.
As of now, church officials have not disclosed the circumstances that led to the crucifix falling. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Father Sánchez Molinari’s death late Saturday in a brief statement authored by Cardinal Archbishop Monsignor Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera.
The statement described Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari as a cherished figure who, as parish priest at the Perpetual Help church, had gone home to enjoy the presence of God.
On Sunday, numerous residents gathered at the Perpetuo Socorro church to pay their respects. Monsignor Gerardo Miguel Neves led a Mass that evening. Other Catholic orders and parishes where Father Sánchez Molinari had served also honored him and expressed their condolences.
In a statement, the local Salesians Order expressed gratitude for the blessings they received through Father Patricio, noting his warmth and dedication to the young women he ministered to in Guayaquil.
Similarly, the San Lorenzo de Vinces Parish released a message offering prayers for Father Sánchez Molinari’s eternal rest, requesting comfort for his family, fellow priests, and all who remember him fondly.
Interestingly, just the day prior to his passing, the Archdiocese had congratulated him on the anniversary of his ordination. A poignant reminder of how life can change in an instant.
