Canadian Prime Minister’s Apology Over Ad Criticizing Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed regret regarding an advertisement that took aim at President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. This announcement came after he spoke with reporters following his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference in Gyeongju, South Korea.

According to news reports, Carney conveyed his apologies directly to President Trump.

He stated, “I have apologized.” This news broke shortly after the U.S. confirmed on October 25 that it would implement an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods. This came about after the U.S. aired an ad that was criticized for manipulating audio and visuals from a speech by former President Ronald Reagan, which was intended to discredit Trump’s tariffs.

President Trump commented on the matter, claiming, “Canada was caught red-handed with fraudulent ads about Ronald Reagan’s tariff speech.” He continued, emphasizing that the advertising campaign aimed to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to ease tariffs that Canada allegedly used to harm the U.S. He promised to increase tariffs on Canada by 10% due to what he deemed gross factual inaccuracies and hostility from Canada.

Carney clarified that the ad was not a product of the Canadian government and mentioned that he had informed Ontario Premier Doug Ford of his disapproval regarding its use.

Trump also shared his thoughts during a flight on Air Force One, stating that their relationship was good. He acknowledged that Carney had apologized for the misleading advertisement.

Trump later reiterated his stance on Truth Social, criticizing the ad for misrepresenting Reagan and stating that the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation was contemplating its legal options regarding this issue.

Breitbart News noted that Carney had visited the White House earlier in October without securing any agreements on trade or tariffs.

Some supporters of Carney may feel a sense of unease regarding the difference between his assertive campaign style and the more congenial interaction he had with Trump. In a pointed remark, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged Carney not to return from Washington without a trade deal.
