Principal's vision: Empowering her community through education

Until July 4th, the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream is showcasing U.S. citizens who share their perspectives on what the 2026 American Dream signifies to them. One of them is Yvonne Chan, the principal of Vaughan Next Century Learning Center in San Fernando, California. She founded a social service center that enhances educational outcomes and offers vital services like immunizations, child care, job training, and legal assistance to community members.

I really do think I’ve realized the American dream.

Chan, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, reflects on her journey. After moving to the United States, she rose from a special education assistant to a principal. “I achieved the American Dream. I want to help my children achieve not just what I did, but even more,” she said.

My background is a bit challenging. I was raised by a single mother in China. Though my mother was uneducated and worked as a housekeeper for affluent families, I was lucky enough to receive support from the American Maryknoll Sisters at a Catholic school in Hong Kong. They believed in me and pushed me to pass an exam that led to funding for my education in America.

I arrived here as a poor immigrant, starting out with nothing. But I am incredibly thankful for the chance to receive a solid education, complete a graduate degree at UCLA, and become a teacher and principal. Additionally, I currently contribute as a policymaker for the California State Board of Education and serve as a commissioner for the Children and Families Los Angeles City Commission.

This vision we share not only equips students from early ages for quality education and careers but also fosters communities that become healthier and more prosperous.

For me, the possibilities are endless. I have the freedom to take risks, innovate, unite people regardless of their differences, and even envision what seems impossible.

I’ve truly achieved the American dream. I’m dedicated to helping kids reach their goals, and achieve even more than I thought possible. It’s all about having the right strategy and mission. Gather your team, and over time, you can make it happen. It’s crucial that we don’t simply accept things as they are; we need to actively shape what can and should be.

The American Dream Video Project showcases authentic stories that highlight pathways to opportunity. This initiative, presented by the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, aligns with celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. The MCAAD in Washington, DC, is a new cultural hub featuring interactive exhibits and narratives about realizing the American dream. For more information, please visit: mcaad.org.
