Chicago Freshman Murder: Illegal Immigrant Charged in Sheridan Gorman’s Death

The murder of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman by illegal immigrant Jose Medina-Medina has led to intense scrutiny and criticism of sanctuary city policies in Chicago. Commentators have pointed to the fact that Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan national, had a prior arrest for shoplifting but was still allowed to remain free. This has sparked outrage, particularly in response to comments made by a Democratic lawmaker about being in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s office has expressed sorrow over Gorman’s tragic death, stating that the incident should not be politicized, especially by figures like former President Donald Trump. Gorman, an 18-year-old from Yorktown Heights, New York, lost her life while enjoying the Northern Lights by Lake Michigan, an event that resonated deeply across Springfield.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and Loyola community who are mourning this senseless act,” stated Pritzker’s office to Fox News Digital. The governor’s team added that there is no room for violent crime in their city and stressed the need for accountability for those accused.

Despite this, Pritzker faced criticism for his responses, particularly in contrast to how rapidly he acted regarding other recent violent incidents in Minneapolis involving federal agents. He also did not clarify whether he would ensure compliance with the Laken-Riley Act, which calls for detaining undocumented immigrants until federal authorities can intervene.

Interestingly, while ICE detained Medina-Medina over the weekend, the state follows the Trust Act, a law that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities and prevents holding suspects beyond their scheduled release without a federal warrant.

Medina-Medina has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and other serious offenses. His previous shoplifting charge has brought more attention to the implications of the Laken-Riley Act within the ongoing debate regarding illegal immigration and public safety.

A detention hearing for Medina-Medina was set for Monday, but there are reports from a Chicago police official suggesting that he may have tuberculosis, which further complicates the situation.
