Pritzker establishes a commission for oversight following Trump's Chicago raids

Illinois Governor Announces Accountability Commission

On Thursday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker revealed plans for a new “accountability” commission designed to publicly track the actions of federal employees amid ongoing military operations in Chicago and its vicinity under the Trump administration.

The Illinois Accountability Commission (IAC), formed through an executive order, will review federal law enforcement activities within the state. Its main goals include documenting their impacts on local communities and recommending necessary reforms.

The commission is set to hold public hearings and will collect input from a diverse range of participants, including local officials, community members, journalists, and experts. This information will feed into a comprehensive report intended for the governor.

Pritzker’s office shared that these reports aim to “illuminate any misconduct” by federal employees and create a formal public record that can be utilized for pursuing justice and accountability.

According to the governor, “The federal government is exceeding its authority to instill fear in communities while neglecting its legal and moral responsibilities.” He emphasized that fear would not be the response: “We will confront intimidation with truth.”

Pritzker asserted, “We’re going to make it clear to everyone—here in Chicago, across Illinois, and beyond—about what’s happening. We’ll build a thorough record that accurately reflects the situation.” He added, “I believe that in the end, honest individuals will look at the commission’s findings and demand answers and accountability.”

This initiative is Pritzker’s latest move in response to President Trump’s tough immigration policies in Chicago.

In the announcement, the governor’s office referenced concerns over excessive force, the presence of undercover agents in unmarked vehicles, military-style raids, and reported violence from federal agents.

The IAC consists of up to nine members, all appointed by the governor. Pritzker has already named six of the members during the commission’s unveiling.

As for the White House and the Department of Homeland Security, there has been no immediate response to inquiries regarding this initiative.
