Illinois Governor’s Stance on Immigration Enforcement
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) has suggested that Democrats might pursue legal action against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for their enforcement of federal immigration laws.
During an interview with FOX 32 Chicago, Pritzker mentioned the potential for charging DHS and ICE agents who are involved in apprehending undocumented immigrants in Illinois, a sanctuary state. He remarked, “The tide will turn at some point,” emphasizing the possibility of such actions.
“These individuals should recognize that while they may not face charges today, we are seriously contemplating it. Since the statute of limitations from the Trump era hasn’t run out, prosecution remains a possibility.”
Pritzker indicated that he is in discussions with Attorney General Kwame Raoul (D) and others about the feasibility of criminal investigations targeting DHS and ICE agents.
He elaborated, “We’re conferring with the state’s attorney and the attorney general to ensure we abide by the law in this matter.”
Pritzker also criticized President Trump, claiming that his administration has unleashed ICE to enforce immigration laws, leading to chaos on state soil. He expressed concern about the political environment, saying, “These are dangerous times.”
The President is creating turmoil within our state. He’s pursuing political foes, and I can hardly believe no one recognizes the gravity of this. He seems to be leaning toward establishing an authoritarian regime.”
Recently, Tom Homan, a prominent figure in Trump’s administration regarding border issues, voiced his disapproval of Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) for their attempts to limit ICE’s actions. He stated, “Whether it’s Pritzker, Newsom, Bass, or Brandon Johnson, we invite you to aid us in making your communities safer. If you prefer to sit back and watch us do the work, go right ahead. I’m sorry.”
As of October 1, ICE has made over 800 arrests of undocumented immigrants across Illinois.
