Illinois Governor Faces GOP Lawmakers on Sanctuary Policies

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is set to appear alongside other Democratic governors in front of GOP lawmakers during a Thursday hearing focused on the contentious US sanctuary status.

In comments released to the media, Pritzker defended state policies and asserted that his administration had to step in without any federal help amid the ongoing border crisis. He expressed concern that some governors and mayors from border states were misusing taxpayer money by treating immigrants as mere “pawns,” rather than fulfilling the foundational American ideals.

Pritzker criticized Republican actions, suggesting that they only serve as political maneuvers that have worsened the situation—particularly mentioning their practice of relocating undocumented immigrants to northern liberal cities.

He plans to highlight the challenges Illinois has faced, stating that state resources have been stretched thin due to a lack of support from both parties during this crisis.

Despite these challenges, Pritzker aims to showcase how his state has managed the influx of immigrants, from providing temporary housing to supporting long-term integration, allowing new arrivals to contribute positively to the economy.

Interestingly, while addressing public safety issues, Pritzker has continued to invest in local law enforcement, including the Illinois State Police, even as resources are limited. He emphasizes that violent crime rates have decreased during his tenure.

It’s also worth noting that he maintains a strict stance against violent offenders, regardless of their immigration status, while stressing that Illinois law allows collaboration with federal authorities regarding criminal warrants.

Pritzker is expected to welcome federal officials to work in Illinois but is clear about prioritizing state interests, particularly in resource allocation. He hopes that residents will feel secure seeking assistance from local law enforcement.

He plans to draw parallels between his family’s history, which includes fleeing violence in Russia, and the challenges facing immigrants today. Pritzker intends to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform that provides opportunities for law-abiding families like his own.

The hearing, dubbed “Hearing with the Sanctuary Governor,” will convene at 10 am before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, with Pritzker joined by Democratic governors Tim Walz of Minnesota and Kathy Hochul of New York.
