In the final monologue of HBO’s “Real Time” that aired Friday, host Bill Maher said that pro-Hamas protesters should be fighting the real apartheid against women in the Middle East, not Israel’s fictional apartheid, and that they must deal with the same treatment that women receive from those who side with the protesters.
“If you’re going to protest for a few hours, [a keffiyeh]you need to go all the way and spend the afternoon [a burqa]I cannot stand with those who ruthlessly oppress women without at least understanding what I stand for.”
He then added: “You want a cause? I have a cause for you: apartheid. Yes, apartheid. What you’ve been screaming about against Israel for months. Never mind that Israeli Arabs are in fact full citizens.” [T]”Today, at this very moment, hundreds of millions of women are treated worse than second-class citizens. When you deny a category of people the right to even show their face, that is apartheid and it continues in many countries.”
After talking about the oppression of women in Iran, Maher said, “I know 1619 was bad, but this is happening right now, right under your nose piercings.” 15 Middle Eastern countries including Gaza“There are laws, laws that require women to submit to their husbands, not just Harrison Butker’s opinion. … My children, if you really want to change the world, if you really want to end Monday morning traffic jams, this needs to be your attention, apartheid, gender apartheid. This should be the social justice issue of your time. How about all women be free, from the river to the sea?”
He concluded: “But the reality is, this isn’t a problem at all, and there’s only one reason for this: the people doing this are not white. And I hate to break it to you young people, but non-white people can do bad things too.”
