The group appeared on the southbound side of the freeway near National Boulevard in West Los Angeles at about 9 a.m., calling for a ceasefire and a U.S. arms embargo on Israel.
“Today, American Jews risked their lives to demand a permanent ceasefire and an end to US military aid to Israel,” If Not Now LA, a Jewish activist group that took part in the protest, wrote on Instagram.
“The Joe Biden administration cannot provide Israel with $14 billion in unconditional aid while being complicit in the unchecked killing of Palestinian civilians. Calls for a lasting ceasefire only make sense if no more funding is given to the Israeli military.”
The freeway was closed at National Boulevard as of 9:10 a.m., but was fully reopened just over an hour after the protest began, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Mike Naser.
Protesters carried signs calling for an embargo and urged fellow Jews to reject the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel group that has heavily funded U.S. congressional elections, including the recent defeat of Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri).
Drivers were advised to get off at Olympic Boulevard and detour onto the 10 Freeway while protesters blocked traffic.
Video posted to a social media site at 9:35 a.m. showed California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers detaining multiple people as other protesters marched along the shoulder of the road, chanting slogans.
A total of eight people were arrested, the CHP confirmed. KTLAAround 40 protesters were also seen on the highway, most of whom left on foot when police arrived.
