Pro-Trump impeachment Republican Sen Bill Cassidy targeted for ouster Freedom Caucus founding member

Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming told Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who voted to convict, after the House passed an impeachment resolution against former President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. He announced his candidacy to remove the MP.

Fleming is a former U.S. congressman and one of the founders of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, according to a press release about his Senate bid.

“Senator Cassidy has failed the people of Louisiana,” Fleming said in a press release.

“I'm going to fight to bring real conservative solutions to the United States Senate, not cut short based on these conservative principles, and I'm going to stand up and criticize Trump, as I have done many times before. “I will work with the president,” he declared.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach the senator for comment.

Fleming also held the post in the previous Trump administration.

“I cannot adequately express my deep sense of pride having served President Trump in the West Wing of the White House, where he was literally fighting for his political life against those who attacked him and turned their backs on him.” said Fleming. “But the opportunity to support him for America First principles is why I am committed to serving the people of Louisiana in the United States Senate.''

Trump supported Cassidy's re-election in 2020, but Cassidy was one of the Senate Republicans to vote to convict him after the House voted to impeach him in early 2021.

The Senate vote took place after President Trump had already left office, and the number of senators who voted to convict fell short of the required threshold for conviction.

Trump slammed Sen. Cassidy in a post on Truth Social earlier this year.

President Trump declared on April 1, “One of the worst senators in the United States Senate is without a doubt Bill Cassidy. He may be a Republican, but he's a total freak.”

“Bill Cassidy is now being shunned in his own state as a dishonest frivolous, which is a beautiful thing to see,” Trump said in another post.

Cassidy's current term in the U.S. Senate ends in early 2027.

Fleming previously ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2016.
