Progressive House candidate claims undocumented immigrants should have access to healthcare

Health Care Debate In Congress

“Everyone in the world deserves medical care,” stated Kat Abugazare, a 26-year-old Democratic candidate vying for a seat in the Illinois 9th Congressional District. During a discussion on CNN’s “Newsnight,” she questioned, “How is that controversial?”

Abugazare has been vocal on her campaign platform, emphasizing that medical care should be accessible to all. When asked whether this applies to illegal immigrants, she reiterated her stance that no one should suffer because they can’t afford healthcare. “I’m a bit of a monster… why is it controversial that if they can’t pay, we still want to prevent someone from dying in a hospital?” she remarked.

The political landscape is heating up as President Trump pushes forward with what he calls a “big beautiful bill,” aimed at fulfilling key campaign promises like border security and tax cuts. This legislation is under scrutiny from both sides of the aisle.

Republicans, particularly in the House, are promoting reforms aimed at Medicaid, claiming they will eliminate waste and ensure benefits reach those in true need. A focal point of this reform includes the exclusion of illegal immigrants from Medicaid, drawing sharp criticism from Democrats who have rallied against potential Medicaid cuts.

Since Trump took office, Democrats have been resolute in their opposition, framing Medicaid cuts as a significant topic ahead of upcoming congressional elections. House Republicans, like Rep. Erin Huchin, have defended the bill, claiming it won’t adversely affect vulnerable populations.

As tensions rise, the divide becomes more apparent. Houchin emphasized that the aim is to target inefficiencies in Medicaid without disadvantaging anyone. However, Abugazare has countered this, arguing, “Your bill will cut the coverage for 11 million Americans, and it still costs more than universal healthcare. Healthcare is a human right.” Her remarks have drawn strong reactions, with some in the Republican camp deeming them extreme.

Abugazare’s motivation for running is clear: she believes current leaders are out of touch. She’s taking on long-standing Congress member Jan Shakowski, bringing her experience from progressive organizations to what’s shaping up to be a contentious race.
