Protests and Controversies in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – A protest movement here has seen support from various left-leaning nonprofits, which are distributing “F-K Ice” packages that include protective gear. These packages are being handed out to protesters who frequently confront police, federal agents, and the National Guard in downtown LA.

Footage from the area shows an unclear group of individuals distributing face shields and other equipment to the protesters. The “F-K Ice” package consists of goggles, masks, gloves, and even a “Prison Assistance” phone number, all organized by a nonprofit named Operation Healthy Hearts.

This group started as a grassroots initiative but has since aligned itself with political activism, supporting protests and community-based projects. At least one of the organizations involved previously received federal funding before changes made under the Trump administration halted that support.

“The federal government…” said Pamela Miller, COO of the LA Poverty Sector.

This sector, which manages the Skid Row History Museum & Archive, allowed a partner organization to utilize its space to distribute PPE to protesters. Amid the chaos, pamphlets advocating violent actions against police—such as attacking police cars and targeting banks—were also found being handed out.

The pamphlets included tips on avoiding police tactics viewed as oppressive. Yet, Miller described the nightly violence in LA as the actions of “some knuckleheads doing stupid stuff.”

She expressed concerns regarding the immigrant communities, stating, “[ICE] claims to want to remove criminals. But where are they going? To the church, to the school.” Miller emphasized the vulnerability of those communities, noting, “They are targeting people who can’t protect themselves.”

“We want to support people’s rights to stand up to authoritarian takeovers, but many, I mean, yeah, some are just doing dumb things,” she added.

The unrest in Los Angeles has been intense, with protests transforming into riots during the day and looting at night. The LA Poverty Sector, alongside another group—Mutual Aid/Social Therapy (MAST)—has been distributing PPE kits, which they describe as part of a decentralized support initiative.

However, instead of focusing purely on mental health support, the organization has been involved in helping protesters protect themselves from potential law enforcement actions.

While Operation Healthy Hearts typically engages in community services, like food drives for the homeless in Skid Row, their creation of “F-K Ice” kits reflects an integration of activism within their mission.

“The police are attacking journalists and protesters. We need to support each other,” said Alexandra Pierce, a volunteer distributing PPE at a protest.

“I want to help those in need and I’m passionate about the politics behind it,” she said, highlighting her desire to protect vulnerable individuals.

Another group involved in this movement, Mutual Aid Los Angeles Network (MALAN), serves as a coordination hub for various aid organizations, including MAST and Operation Healthy Hearts. Recently, Operation Healthy Hearts obtained nonprofit status and plans on expanding its outreach services.

MALAN itself was founded amid the COVID-19 pandemic but has also shown a history of supporting leftist causes online, including protests against Israel.

Protests erupted in LA on Friday following ICE operations that detained individuals suspected of being in the country illegally. Demonstrators attempted to intervene preemptively by blocking ICE’s movements and demonstrating outside detention facilities.

ICE has asserted that many individuals arrested during their operations have significant criminal histories, including serious offenses.

As tensions have escalated, nightly protests have often ended in violence, with burning vehicles littering the streets and looters targeting businesses.
