Progressives like Gavin Newsom and AOC heightened anti-ICE comments ahead of the fatal shooting at a Dallas center.

Following the death of a migrant on Wednesday morning and some alarming rhetoric directed towards government agencies, a fatal shooting has raised significant concerns. The incident was largely linked to harsh criticisms coming from those in powerful positions.

Joshua Yarn, 29, was discovered with a gunshot wound on a rooftop close to an immigration processing facility.

President Trump remarked that “the violence stems from radical left-wing Democrats who continuously vilify law enforcement, calling for the dismantling of ICE, and likening its officers to Nazis.”

“I urge all Democrats to halt this aggressive rhetoric against ICE and American law enforcement!”

Back in July, the White House had urged Democrats to moderate their criticism of ICE, though many ignored this call.

Gov. Gavin Newsom

California Governor Gavin Newsom has openly criticized ICE, even encouraging protests against its agents. These protests included significant unrest in Los Angeles earlier in June.

Under his direction, a left-leaning nonprofit organization provided protesters with equipment like face masks and goggles, along with a hotline for “prison assistance.”

Just hours before the Dallas shooting, Newsom appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” labeling ICE as a “civilian military,” suggesting it bolsters the “authoritarian tendencies” of the Trump administration.

“People often ask if I’m exaggerating about authoritarianism. If you’re here in this country, we’re not exaggerating,” he stated.

“This is happening in the United States. Masked individuals are jumping out of unmarked vehicles, people are disappearing without due process, and there’s zero accountability. This should not become normalized.”

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was arrested during a protest at an ICE facility in New Jersey, has compared the agency to historical slave catchers.

“People discuss how challenging life is in New Jersey. For us, it’s been tough for a long time,” he stated in a video prior to his arrest, emphasizing that “black individuals” often overlap with many undocumented people.

“If you don’t have your papers, you could end up back on the plantation. They’re out there chasing you down.”

“Team”

Referred to unofficially as “the team,” several young Democrats in the House of Representatives frequently denounce ICE for its actions that negatively impact their communities.

Among the most outspoken is New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who seems to be positioning herself for a 2028 presidential bid.

In February, Ocasio-Cortez and others circulated a “know your rights” guide to assist people in evading ICE agents at their doors.

This past May, Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash for confrontations with border official Tom Homan over accusations that he impedes immigrant rights.

On Tuesday, Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar called for ICE’s abolition in a deleted social media post, alleging the agency had used a five-year-old as bait to apprehend an immigrant father.

Omar described this as cruel and confirmed her stance against ICE.

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey

In June, Massachusetts Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey spearheaded a statewide petition to address what they termed an “escalation of aggression” from ICE.

“ICE’s practices not only target individuals with violent crime convictions but also endanger law-abiding community members, including children and parents,” they said, adding that ICE’s actions make communities less safe.

They noted the “immeasurable human costs” resulting from these tactics, as families are ripped apart and both citizens and non-citizens grow increasingly fearful.

Joy Reid

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid criticized ICE raids as nothing more than “performances,” exaggerating their impact during a February broadcast.

She compared current deportation efforts to the historical mistreatment of Jews in Nazi Germany, illustrating the parallels between that era and present-day America.

In June, she published an Op-Ed that drew comparisons to her observations in Los Angeles, emphasizing the chaos brought on by ICE’s presence.

Joe Scarborough

Joe Scarborough, a prominent MSNBC anchor, has openly called ICE’s tactics “un-American” and “a ham-fisted attempt at intimidation.”

He noted that while border patrols have a role to play, their actions shouldn’t involve intimidation at rallies against the president’s stance, but rather focus on actual border security.

This led him to reflect on why Republicans might be losing favor in public polls recently.

Legislation Against ICE

This summer, several Democratic-led states began passing laws to prevent ICE agents from concealing their identities during public operations. While allowing for protective gear, these laws mandate visible identification for agents.

California recently became the first state to enact such a law, prompting Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem to criticize it and claim agents would not adhere to these new regulations.

New York Senator Patricia Fahy introduced similar legislation in July, which has yet to be signed by Governor Kathy Hochul.

“When federal agents operate in disguise, they’re transforming immigration enforcement into an authoritarian force, which should raise alarms for everyone in this country,” Fahy stated.

“This goes beyond immigration; it’s a concerning sign of an authoritarian regime, not the United States we want to be.”
