Project DYNAMO, founded by veterans, helps Americans in Israel during unrest

Evacuation Efforts Amid Rising Tensions in Israel

Amid ongoing tensions in the region following recent airstrikes between Israel and Iran, efforts to evacuate U.S. citizens and allies from Israel have intensified. Project Dynamo, a nonprofit organization founded by veterans, specializes in rescuing Americans from perilous situations.

Mario Duarte, the CEO of Project Dynamo, highlighted the organization’s role, stating, “We’ll fill the gap. Government bureaucracy can be quite cumbersome, but there’s always a need for someone to step in and assist our fellow Americans, especially those in high-risk areas.” The emphasis is on direct action rather than waiting for government directives.

Project Dynamo has successfully evacuated approximately 250 individuals from Israel amidst escalating conflict. The organization started in 2021 in response to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and has since conducted over 7,000 rescues from various emergencies.

The urgency for evacuation has increased as U.S. airstrikes targeted key nuclear sites in Iran, leading many Americans, particularly those holding dual citizenship, to seek immediate exit from Israel. Current estimates indicate around 700,000 Americans are residing in the country.

As part of their humanitarian efforts, Project Dynamo has implemented logistical measures such as bus evacuations. Despite challenges, the group aims to assist around 1,000 individuals weekly. According to Duarte, recent bombings in Israel have accelerated the need for action.

While the U.S. government has provided guidance to over 25,000 individuals in Israel, the situation remains precarious. Duarte noted that people are anxious to leave, highlighting, “The danger is real, and many are simply not willing to remain in Israel any longer.”

As of now, Project Dynamo’s backlog of requests for assistance is growing, driven partly by funding limitations. The organization remains committed to its mission, believing it can effectively provide support amid these chaotic circumstances. “It’s about showing the good American spirit,” Duarte remarked, emphasizing a sense of duty to help those in need.

In total, 228 Americans and their allies have been evacuated since the conflict escalated, and there are still thousands awaiting extraction. As the situation evolves, both governmental and nonprofit efforts are poised to adapt to the ongoing challenges.
