‘Project Homecoming’ initiates first flight carrying 64 undocumented immigrants who are paid $1,000 to leave voluntarily.

DHS Launches “Project Homecoming” to Assist Illegal Immigrants in Returning to Home Countries

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently kicked off its first initiative called “Project Homecoming,” which saw its inaugural flight depart from Texas on Monday. This program aims to facilitate the return of illegal immigrants from Honduras and Colombia, with 64 individuals opting for voluntary departure.

In a post on X, DHS announced that those who decide to leave the U.S. will be eligible for the same benefits available to illegal immigrants who use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) app to report their intention to leave voluntarily.

“Participants received travel assistance, a $1,000 incentive, and kept the option open for a legal return to the U.S. in the future,” DHS stated.

DHS also shared a video capturing the moments before the flight, showcasing families preparing to leave Houston, with the agency providing food, games, and stuffed animals for children.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that introduced this self-report program, which encourages illegal immigrants to voluntarily depart the United States by offering free flights and financial incentives.

“Project Homecoming” facilitates government-funded flights and offers cash to those who willingly choose to leave the country.

When announcing the order on True Society, Trump claimed the program could save taxpayers “billions and billions of dollars.”

“We’ve made it incredibly easy for illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. They can simply arrive at the airport and get a free flight to their home countries,” Trump stated. “Troopers can arrange free flights to foreign nations, as long as they’re not here,” he added, emphasizing recipients may choose their destination.

The DHS revealed that migrants would each receive a $1,000 financial bonus, which they highlighted as a cost-effective alternative for American taxpayers. This is substantially cheaper than the average expense of over $17,000 associated with arresting, detaining, or deporting individuals.

Trump reiterated, “This deportation bonus will save American taxpayers billions and billions of dollars.”

Illegal immigrants are encouraged to utilize the CBP One app for their departure arrangements. Under the previous Biden administration, this app had been canceled on Trump’s second day in office, impacting how immigrants could manage their entries and appointments at official ports.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem promoted the “Project Homecoming” initiative on X, urging individuals across the nation to take advantage of the program.

“If you’re here illegally, use the CBP Home app to facilitate your departure and receive financial support for your return,” Noem wrote. “Otherwise, you risk fines, arrests, deportation, and barring any chance of returning. If you’re undocumented, consider leaving now to keep open the possibility of returning legally someday.”
