Property Tax Payments and Options in Cuyahoga County
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Property tax bills for the first half of 2025 will go out next week, with payments due on February 19. Homeowners intending to pay by mail should plan accordingly to avoid postal delays.
Residents have various payment options. They can pay by phone, online, or in person. However, it’s crucial that all documents are received or postmarked by February 19 to prevent late fees.
This year may present some challenges. A notification on the Treasurer’s website warns that payments sent close to the deadline might be postmarked late, even if sent on time, due to recent changes in USPS operations.
The United States Postal Service has removed its twice-daily mail pickups, now collecting mail only once a day, which could mean that some letters may not be processed and postmarked until the next day.
“The postmark date reflects when the mail was processed by USPS sorting machines, not when it was placed in the mailbox,” the county’s notice indicates.
Ohio law relies on postmark dates to determine if property tax payments are timely; late postmarks can lead to penalties and interest, which the county cautions against.
To mitigate any risks, taxpayers opting for mail are encouraged to factor in extra time, request an in-person postmark at the post office, or consider alternative payment methods altogether.
Viewing Property Tax Bills
Beginning Monday, homeowners can check their property tax bills online by entering their lot number, name, or address on the county treasurer’s website. Bills will also be accessible through the MyPlace system.
Printed bills are expected to start mailing around January 16, according to a county spokesperson.
