Proposed bill would require Minnesota law enforcement, government agencies to cooperate with ICE

Minnesota lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would prevent state and local government agencies from preventing employees from sharing immigration data requested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).

The bill also requires county attorneys to report illegal immigrants arrested for violent crimes.

President Donald Trump, who campaigned for the immigration crackdown, eased ice restrictions and allowed wider enforcement.

“The motivation behind this bill is to open a series of communications with local governments and deal with dangerous offenders who should not be in our community,” Reimer said. Those who support the bill cited the need for states to follow federal standards on immigration reform. However, critics warned that a large range could be used to target minority communities.

“Non-civil and civilian victims of domestic violence and human trafficking will suffer the most,” Griekel said. “If they know that that means that their families will be separated, or that they may be arrested themselves, then they know that they know that they know their community best, then there is no risk of reporting the crime to local law enforcement agencies.
