Scrutiny on Fairfax County’s Immigration Policies
Steve Descano, the attorney for Fairfax County, Virginia, backed by George Soros, is set to make his first appearance on Capitol Hill next month. This comes as House Republicans investigate the county’s immigration policies, particularly after a repeat illegal immigrant was involved in a murder.
Descano, along with Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee’s Immigration Subcommittee on May 14. The hearing, titled “Fairfax County, Virginia: The Dangerous Consequences of Sanctuary Policies,” aims to evaluate whether the county’s limits on cooperation with federal immigration authorities jeopardize public safety.
This hearing will intensify the focus on the policies that Republicans believe allowed Abdul Jallow, who has a record of 30 arrests, to remain free until he was implicated in the stabbing death of Stephanie Minter.
Minter’s tragic case has drawn significant attention, leading to calls for legislative change. Her family is now backing a recall effort that could challenge Descano’s position. Local news has reported on this development.
Concerns Over Immigration Policies
Descano has previously testified at state legislative hearings but this upcoming session marks his first appearance before a federal committee. His office expressed optimism about discussing Fairfax’s safety record.
In April, when the hearing was first announced, Republican leaders indicated that Descano’s insights would help shape potential reforms related to sanctuary jurisdictions.
The focus of the investigation stems from the murder of Minter, a mother killed at a Fairfax bus stop earlier this year. Jallow, a national from Sierra Leone, has a lengthy criminal background and prior encounters with law enforcement raised alarms.
Fairfax County police had cautioned Descano’s office about Jallow multiple times, suggesting that he might pose a threat. Despite these warnings, several charges against him were dropped, allowing him to remain at large. Prior records show Jallow had been arrested for violent crimes, including incidents leading up to Minter’s death.
Political Backlash and Funding
Descano is also facing criticism for his immigration policy stance, which he argues is aimed at protecting non-citizens. Interestingly, he has reported receiving over $600,000 in campaign funding from a PAC associated with Soros, which supports progressive prosecutors.
There is also scrutiny on the plea deals pursued by Fairfax County, with some reports pointing to cases that seem to minimize immigration-related repercussions. Sheriff Kincaid is facing her own criticism for a policy requiring judicial warrants before transferring inmates to federal custody.
