The individual facing charges for igniting the 2025 fire that led to the catastrophic Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles had a fixation on Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as reported by ABC 7 on Sunday.
In the prosecution’s trial memorandum, it was stated that Jonathan Rinderknecht fixated on Mangione, who is believed to have fatally shot Thompson while he was walking outside a hotel in Manhattan in December 2024.
Before the fires in Los Angeles, Rinderknecht was reportedly upset about a prior relationship with a coworker and had no plans for New Year’s Eve.
As noted in court documents, Rinderknecht, a former Uber driver, allegedly searched for phrases such as “Free Luigi Mangione” and “Down with all the billionaires.”
Some passengers reported that Rinderknecht expressed anger and ranted about capitalism and vigilantism on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025.
According to reports:
When questioned about his reasons for setting the fire, Rinderknecht allegedly remarked, “It stemmed from anger at the wealthy, who think we are essentially enslaved by them,” drawing comparisons between his actions and the murders linked to Mangione.
Rinderknecht has entered a not guilty plea to multiple federal arson charges for the extensive blaze in early 2025, which resulted in the destruction of 7,000 properties, caused $150 billion in damages, and led to 12 fatalities.
Additionally, it has been reported that he contributed to former President Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign and voiced criticisms of President Donald Trump and concerns about climate change on various online platforms, according to Breitbart News.
In December 2024, it was reported that Mangione had read the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, on Goodreads, labeling Kaczynski a “genius” and asserting that “violence is necessary for survival.”
Alleged video clips of Mangione involved in the shooting of Thompson circulated online:
Recently, leftist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker attempted to defend Mangione by stating, “Friedrich Engels wrote about social murder, and Brian Thompson, as the CEO of United Healthcare, was involved in significant social murder.”
A Breitbart News article suggested that Mangione has gained significant attention from leftist circles following Thompson’s alleged murder.
