Protection order granted to alleged victim of J.R. Smith's assault following 'serious bodily injury'

An emergency protective order has been issued against former NBA player J.R. Smith after allegations surfaced that he inflicted “serious bodily injury” on a woman during a violent incident in Texas last month, according to court documents accessed by the California Post.

Smith is prohibited from any form of contact with the woman, except through legal representation, and is required to stay at least 333 yards away from her home and workplace as stated in the order.

The protective order also restricts Smith from possessing any firearms or ammunition.

Signed by a judge on September 29, this order will remain active until December 29.

On September 18, Smith was accused of “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” causing injuries to a woman he was either related to, living with, or in a dating relationship, according to a criminal complaint filed on October 2.

During the incident, Smith allegedly hit, grabbed, or pushed the woman, as detailed in the complaint.

A warrant for his arrest was issued shortly after the event, and Smith was detained during a traffic stop in Royse City, Texas, on September 28.

After being released on a $5,000 bond on September 29, Smith now faces a charge of assault causing bodily injury related to family violence, as revealed in court records.

His attorney, Justin A. Moore, expressed in a statement to the Post that “JR is eager to see this matter resolved and has full confidence in the legal process.”

Moore further emphasized that Smith is “presumed innocent” and stated, “we will address this matter in Court. We ask that everyone respect the privacy of all involved throughout the process.”

A request for additional comments from Moore regarding the protective order went unanswered.

Smith had a lengthy NBA career from 2004 to 2020, where he won two championships.
