Protester against Israel subdued by security at the Tour de France finish line

Protesters opposing Israel’s presence in the Tour de France were swiftly apprehended while attempting to disrupt the notable cycling event. Reports indicate that a man jumped over a barricade near the finish line, heading towards a racer while expressing his dissent against Israeli participation and carrying unspecified items.

A security officer acted quickly, intercepting the demonstrators just 25 meters from the finish line and pushing them back into the crowd behind the barrier. This occurred during Stage 11 of the three-week competition, as cyclists approached the conclusion of a challenging 97.5-mile route in Toulouse, southern France.

Amidst this, videos of the incident circulated online, showing a man donning a shirt that read “Israel has left the tour” and wearing a keffiyeh, often linked to support for Palestine. Observers had mixed reactions, with one commenter expressing disdain for the protesters’ actions.

Another person remarked on the efficiency of the security response, noting the rapid removal of the demonstrators. The protests are part of broader movements advocating for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions, framing the Israeli team as “Team Genocide.” These activists aim to hold demonstrations at prominent cycling events like the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España.

The group urges for more peaceful demonstrations along the race’s route, calling for action against what they deem as genocidal acts. The Tour de France consists of 21 stages and is set to conclude on July 27 in Paris.

Efforts to gather a comment from the Tour de France organization went unanswered.
